DOWNTON Abbey star Allen Leech was back in his hometown of Dublin today to call on Irish ladies to run, jog or walk for CRY Ireland.

Allen – who plays Tom Branson in the hit period drama Downton – lent his support to CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) at the sixth annual CRY Pure Style Fashion Luncheon in association with Arnotts today.

And the event has an extra personal signifcance for Allen as he reveals a personal friend died of the syndrome.

The annual event, which has become a staple of the Irish fashion calendar, took place at the Shelbourne Hotel today.

While he was in town Allen posed for photographs to promote the charities drive to get participants of the Flora Mini Marathon to run for CRY on June 2.

Allen was a close personal friend of teenager Peter Greene who died of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome in 1996.

Devastated by his death his parents Michael and Marie Greene set up the charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) in 2002 to support other families who lost loved ones to Sudden Cardiac Death.

The Cry Pure Style fund-raising fashion show event is held annually in aid of CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young), with the funds raised going towards the invaluable work that is ongoing at the Centre for Cardiac Risk in Young Persons in Tallaght Hospital.

“I am delighted to attend this event today and show my support to Michael and Marie Greene and to honour the memory of my friend Peter. CRY is a fantastic and life-saving charity and a most worthy cause,” he says. “I would call on those thinking of running the marathon this year to run it for CRY.”

Orla Durkan, CEO of CRY said: “This is the sixth annual CRY Pure Style Fashion Luncheon which is becoming more and more successful each year. It is one of the main fundraising events in our calendar and is incredibly important in raising funds to keep the free service running in the CRYP Centre in Tallaght Hospital. With high-profile cases of Sudden Cardiac Arrest, there is more awareness about underlying heart conditions. We need to build on this awareness and help save more lives through screening and treatment for those with a heart condition.”

‘It’ll be a nightmare working with pal Rob’, jokes Downton’s Allen

The Downton Abbey Childline Ball - Arrivals

THEY are on-screen enemies, but Irish actor Allen Leech has lined up Downton Abbey co-star Rob James-Collier to play the lead in his directorial debut.

Killiney native Allen said that Rob would be “a nightmare” to direct in the short film Quiz Night because they were such good friends.

“I’m stealing him,” the 32-year-old added. “It’s a lovely little script that we decided to make. I’ve never tried it, and if you don’t try, you don’t know.”

Allen’s career has come a long way in the past decade. After making his breakthrough in the 2004 film Cowboys and Angels, he joined Downton Abbey in 2010 as chauffeur Tom Branson.

“When I first joined, I thought I’d be the chauffeur for a couple of episodes, and now here I am running the estate,” Allen has said.

And if his character ever meets his end, he wants it to be at the hands of Rob, who plays Thomas Barrow in the ITV period drama.

“If I was going, I’d like Thomas to kill me,” he said. “We could wrestle for a knife and Thomas would win.”

Allen, who lives in London, just finished work on film The Imitation Game, on which he worked with A-listers Benedict Cumberbatch and and Keira Knightley.
